A frequent cacoepy (or mispronunciation) of the word Pacemaker. Although the term “spacemaker” makes lexical sense in English (and has been employed for marketing purposes to describe a product that requires little space), it is not a “real” word (i.e. not in the dictionary). In the medical context, a patient referring to a spacemaker is almost surely referring to a pacemaker. For the curious out there, the opposite of cacoepy is orthoepy.
